Hydrogen Storage Seminar - 22 and 23 January 2024

Engineering and safety findings of our demonstration project and the way forward

Gasunie is preparing projects for large-scale hydrogen storage in salt caverns and has carried out early activities to demonstrate that hydrogen storage in salt caverns is possible. The intention is to develop hydrogen storage in salt caverns from the knowledge and experience with natural gas storage, in cooperation with the competent authorities.

In order to demonstrate the safe and reliable storage of hydrogen in a cavern, we used a borehole instead of a leached cavern. The borehole has the same characteristics as a leached cavern but is, because of its limited content, ideal for conducting tests with a limited amount of hydrogen.
The demonstration is carried out together with suppliers in the supply chain and in good communication with the surrounding area. The results of the activities are used to demonstrate existing standards and if needed to develop new standards for materials, equipment, operating procedures and HSE measures.

This demonstration is important input for acquiring the necessary permits and consent to commission the salt caverns for hydrogen storage. It will pave the way for safe and reliable large-scale storage of hydrogen in the salt caverns at Zuidwending (Netherlands).

You are invited

We are organizing a seminar on 22 and 23 January 2024, together with our project partners, to present the results of this demonstration project. In the seminar you will get information on:

  • The need for hydrogen storage.
  • The building of a storage.
  • Possibilities to convert natural gas storage into a hydrogen storage.
  • Which activities are performed in the project.
  • Outcome and recommendations on the activities.

And the second day of the seminar there will be a visit to our storage facility and demonstration site.

The seminar will take place at Gasunie's headquarters in Groningen, the Netherlands.
